Daniel Elmo Davis Sr.

December 5, 1926 - October 7, 2024

Daniel Elmo Davis Sr., 97, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Dan was born in Tyrrell County on December 5, 1926, to the late James Lloyd and Albina Simmons Davis. He was married to Mary Daniels Davis who preceded him in death.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served his country with the United States Army during World War II. He attended many Veteran activities during the year. 

Farming was his way of life and he loved his job. He believed in getting up early and working ‘til dark to get things done. 

Dan was proud of his county and served on many boards, including county commissioners, Board of Education, and Farm Bureau, to name a few.  

He had many friends and enjoyed going to the Short Stop every morning to visit with them. They discussed politics, farming, fishing and whatever came along. It was the highlight of his day. 

Dan was a special man and was loved by all.

Surviving is a son, Daniel Davis Jr. (Carol) of Columbia; a daughter, Sue D. Cooper (Donald) of Columbia; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Davenport, Jordan Davis (Carlie) and Danielle D. Carawan (Charlie), all of Columbia; and three great-grandchildren, Magnolia Davis, Delilah Carawan and Charlie Carawan III

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers Sultan Davis, David Davis and Jack Davis; and two sisters, Ethel Armstrong and Grace Phelps.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, PO Box 168, Columbia, NC, 27925, or a charity of one's choice.

Alison Lancaster officiated a service Wednesday, October 9, at Bryan Funeral Service Chapel, Columbia. Burial followed at the Bodwell Cemetery. 

Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia.

Kendale Gerod Hill

Former Roper resident Kendale Gerod Hill died October 8, 2024, at UNC Medical Center, Chapel Hill. A resident of Raleigh, he was 38.

Bishop Johnson Hazel officiated a service Tuesday, October 15, at Toodle's Chapel. Burial followed in New Bethel Disciples of Christ Church Cemetery, Roper.

The family received friends one hour prior to service. 

Toodle’s Funeral Home, Washington Street, Plymouth, was in charge of arrangements.
