Marines celebrate 249th birthday

As they have for half a decade, Washington County Marine Corps members gathered together to celebrate the organization’s 249th birthday on the eve of Veterans Day with their annual ball and evening dinner.

Friends, family and officials gathered in Plymouth’s Maritime Museum, where they spent Friday night sharing old stories and paying homage to the bravery of the men and women who have served their nation as part of the Corps.

After a long round of dining, courtesy of S&M Venue’s catering, the gathering embarked on their traditional rites and ceremonies.

Chief among those ceremonies was the traditional cake cutting ceremony, which Master Gunnery Sgt. Phillip McNair cut with his officer’s saber, as he always does. As is tradition, the youngest Marine and the oldest marine present in the room exchanged pieces of cake, symbolizing the passage of knowledge and experience between generations of warriors.
