Dixie P. Clifton
Dixie Carol Phelps Clifton, 82, formerly of Creswell and more recently The Tyrrell House, died Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Mrs. Clifton was born in Washington County on December 15, 1942, and was the daughter of the late Samuel David and Lillian Gertrude Spruill Phelps.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sherrell Reid Clifton; by sisters, Neva Perry and Nina Phelps; and by her brother, Wade Phelps.
Retired from George C. Moore Company in Edenton, she was raised in the fellowship of Mt. Tabor Original Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are her sons, Jeffrey Wade Clifton and Tony Reid Clifton, both of Creswell; and Samuel Paul Clifton (wife, Hayley) of Edenton; a sister, Betty Lou Cohoon of Hampton, VA; four grandchildren, Nichole Clifton, Sam Clifton, Iver Clifton and Drake Rose (wife Carlee); and four great-grandchildren, Killian Morris, Emmalyn Morris, Syler Rose and Karsyn Rose.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 18, in the chapel of Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home and Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by the Rev. Greg Biggs. The burial will be at a later time in Azalea Memorial Gardens.
Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service.

Carol O. Outten
August 7, 1931 – January 8, 2025
Carol O’Connor Outten, 93, formerly of Plymouth, died on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Peak Resources Outer Banks.
Mrs. Outten was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, on August 7, 1931, to the late James and Mary Donahue O’Connor. She was married to John Winston Outten, who preceded her in death.
She was a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church in Plymouth and most recently a member of St. Andrews by the Sea at Nags Head.
She worked for the former Washington County Hospital as a medical technician for over 40 years.
She loved her family, especially her three boys, and was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren.
She was a skilled bridge player, enjoying the company of her dear friends.
She was also an avid life-long artist. She shared her work with her family saying “It’s not very good but…” Every person in the family owns a piece of her art, a treasure to all. She shared her passion with her grandchildren, holding art contests that she managed to make each child a winner of the one-dollar grand prize. She was loved by all that knew her.
She lived her last years at nursing facilities in Tarboro and Nags Head, where she endeared herself to the staff who cared for her with kindness and compassion and became a part of her family as well.
A memorial service in celebration and thanksgiving for her life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Plymouth at 11 a.m., January 21. Inurnment will take place in the family plot in the church cemetery. Reverend Nathan Finnin will officiate.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church Parrish Hall.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey A. Outten (Fennette) of Hot Springs, AR; Robert L. Outten (Connie) of Southern Shores; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Outten, of Roper; eight grandchildren, Lindsay Gullett (Ryan), Stacia Pentrancosta (Christopher), Elizabeth Outten, Stephen Outten (Ashley), Graham Outten, Caroline O’Neill (Jim), Catherine Olivo (Andy) and John Outten (Emily); 11 great-grandchildren, Gwen Gullett,
Ellis Gullett, Tate Pentrancosta, Maryn Pentrancosta, Charles Olivo, Mary Claire Olivo, Sydney Olivo, Emery Outten, Locklyn Outten, Collins O’Neill and Elliott Outten.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Dana Outten; and two sisters, Pat O. Kennedy, and Peggy O. Kile.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 106 Madison Street, Plymouth, NC 27962.
