Churches take up the cross to mark Good Friday

Local members of Plymouth’s faithful took up the cross on Good Friday, physically and symbolically taking up Jesus’ burden to usher in the Easter holiday.

As has become a staple of a number of Christians in Washington County, believers came together to take turns carrying a wooden cross through Plymouth’s downtown, paying homage to the greatest act of love and sacrifice in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

The first of these institutions to do so was Plymouth’s First Baptist Church. Under the leadership of senior pastor Paul Harrington, a small handful of the congregation gathered for what would be their inaugural cross carrying event under Harrington’s leadership.
