By now most have heard about the so-called Signal Gate, a scandal last week where members of the Trump Administration’s national security leaders accidentally allowed a journalist into their group chat on the Signal messaging service.
Apparently, many of the Trump Administration’s biggest names, such as JD Vance and specifically National Security Advisor Mike Waltz were discussing the imminent attack on the Houthis in Yemen. As far as we know, Waltz inadvertently added Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the leftist magazine, The Atlantic, into the fold.
For his part, Goldberg said on the information because he doubted its authenticity. However, as the attacks commenced just as they said they would in the room, he knew he had struck gold.
He went on to publish what happened in his publication and as you might imagine, the left had a field day.
Just for the record, I can’t say I blame Goldberg for sitting quietly and then going public with the story. After all, as one of the more prominent Trump Administration opponents and leftist thought leaders, this was a journalistic opportunity that does not come around very often.
What ensued was Democrats first legitimate attack against the Trump Administration, and one that they so desperately needed in the face of their own incompetence and lack of real resistance.
As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think the signal leaking is the worst thing in the world for the administration. While there are some Democrats who are deranged enough to claim that it’s a blunder on the same level as the Afghanistan withdrawal a few years back, it’s more embarrassing than truly damaging.
While it wasn’t a great look for the Trump team, it certainly didn’t affect the outcome of the Houthi strike in any major significant way. Still, it was an humiliating moment and a bad headline that they didn’t need in such a politically fraught atmosphere.
I know that most people hate ‘whataboutism’ when it comes to defending and criticizing the behaviors of our political parties. However, you do have to question the sincerity of the outrage coming from Democrats who were not at all disturbed by Hillary Clinton’s private email server and its subsequent destruction in order to cover up information that was indeed a national security risk.
You also have to question the sincerity of the outrage when it comes to all of the frivolous noise over classified documents that went on a few years back. Democrats were screaming to the skies about how terrible it was Trump was keeping boxes of things from his first presidency at Mar-a-Lago that he didn’t want to give back.
We were told that doing so would allow all of the government’s most precious secrets to get out and in some cases, Democrats were accusing Trump of contemplating selling the information to, you guessed it, Russian actors.
That outrage lasted right up until it was later discovered that President Joe Biden had all of his classified keepsakes in a box, in his garage, next to one of his cars. And wouldn’t you know it, just like Tara Reade’s #metoo case against Biden, the classified documents scandal evaporated into thin air and hasn’t been raised since.
All of which is to say that the so-called Signal Gate scandal is certainly an embarrassing black eye for the Trump Administration but not the end of national security and the world as we know it.
But, fair is fair, and when it comes to matters of national security breaches and general government incompetence, it’s fair to say that this is a bad look.
It does make them look incompetent and it does make them look careless and frivolous.
Because if a big time journalist from a hostile newspaper like The Atlantic can simply be buzzed into a encrypted chat, ostensibly by accident, then they can just as easily buzz in some other hostile force that isn’t there just to cut a bad headline for President Trump.
At the same time, that Democrats believe that this is finally the hill to mount a defense from is both sad and incredibly misguided. Because frankly, Democrats are just as reckless and just as foolish on any given day you decide to take more than a cursory glance at them.
Let us not forget that not too long ago, Democratic California representative Eric Swalwell fell for perhaps the oldest trick political pitfall in the book, namely a beautiful spy.
Swalwell was targeted by a literal Chinese femme fatale named Christine Fang whom he almost immediately fell under the sway of and told her anything she wanted to know for some “me love you long time” action.
He wasn’t the only politician under her sway either, and there is no shortage of stories of Democrats creating national security risks over carnal pleasures.
One of the most simultaneously comforting and upsetting things about the American government is that they are just as nefarious as they are in the movies but not nearly as competent.
Which is to say that this kind of nonsense happens all the time and most of us are never privy to the truth of them unless it’s something the media can use the club a Republican over the head with.
At the same time, the Trump Administration does need to be as focused and as competent as humanly possible by sheer virtue of how much is riding on their success.
I keep driving this point home but Republicans don’t really have a lot of time to do the things they need to do to truly change America long-term.
Things like Signal Gate and foolish economic policies such as the newly launched tariff trade war are harmful and utterly unnecessary distractions that the Trump Administration does not need at a time where there is real opportunity to seize back the culture and do the work necessary to keep leftism out of the mainstream.
